Philosophy

  • To help each student achieve their highest musical potential on the piano through performance, technique, sight-reading, music theory, composition, ear-training, and music history.

Teacher Responsibilities

Ms. Jamila Sahar, founder and CEO of The Art of Piano Performance will provide a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere for learning and will offer many enriching educational as well as performing activities. Ms. Sahar will continue to further her teaching skills and musical knowledge by belonging to professional organizations, attending workshops and master piano classes, reading professional publications and engaging in other activities leading to professional growth.

The Art of Piano Performance  will encourage a feeling of success at each student’s individual rate of learning and guide each student towards musical independence with a balanced program of technique, theory, ear-training, sight reading, music history, music appreciation and performance opportunities.

For those students who wish to pursue a professional career in music, our aim is to make your education at The Art of Piano Performance  challenge and exceed your talent, technique, musicianship dreams and skills.

Student Responsibilities

Students agree to be prepared for each lesson

  • In order to make progress satisfactorily, daily quality practice is necessary and required

  • Music theory, essay, or written assignments will have been completed

Parent Responsibilities

Encourage Progress! Many small steps throughout the year yield great results! Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend lessons at any time. To help your child develop self-discipline and good practice habits, set aside a regular time for practice every day. The parent is to provide a piano / keyboard, metronome, and a place allowing quiet uninterrupted practice. Provide a practice environment that is free from interruptions (family, friends, TV, computer, phone or other electronic devices).

Please communicate any questions or concerns about your child’s progress; The Art of Piano Performance is only one part of the triangle to achieve great results

Music is a language-and like any language; there are many basics, which must be mastered prior to advancing to more complex applications. During a course of study, I attempt to cover all areas of musicianship: music history, music theory, formal analysis, harmony, ear-training, sight-reading, performance, and a comprehensive study of keyboard literature and technique in a progressive fashion.

A well-rounded musical education helps students define for themselves what music means to them. Please bear in mind that no two students are exactly alike, and children (as well as adults) learn at different rates of speed. Even brothers and sisters within families differ radically in motivation and temperament. Therefore, I approach students as individuals and attempt to challenge each according to their own unique potential.

Piano performance and playing skills are not isolated events within the lives of each individual. The study of this art and craft is based on the qualities and life of each individual as an entire person as well as the study of music as a whole. In order to develop a true understanding of the repertoire for the piano and how the instrument serves as a tool for this art one must be educated in various areas of music and related fields.

The art of piano performance is not easy, and may not always be ‘fun’. However, given sufficient time and structured practice, it does become enjoyable to master the many different aspects of this art
